What License Is Needed For Working on Pool Heaters

In order to work on pool heaters, gas or electric heat pumps in Florida, a Florida Certified Pool Contractor (CPC) license or an RP (Residential Pool) license is needed to install or reinstall pool heaters according to state code. This license, issued by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), allows contractors to perform pool work. Additionally, if the work involves LP gas heaters, a state license to work on LP equipment is required. Natural gas units also fall under the LP license. Also, in order to work on electric heat pumps, a technician needs to be EPA (Environmental Protect Agency) 608 type II certified as these systems are using refrigerant. If your technician does not have this certification, they should not be working on this equipment.

If you are hiring someone to work on either a gas or an electric heat pump pool heater, make sure they are properly licensed and insured for the type of system they are working on. Having a licensed contractor also means that they should also be insured because in order to hold a CPC or RP license, you have to have proof of insurance.
Your average pool cleaning person most likely does not have any of these licenses as it is not required under Florida law that they have them. However, Florida mandates that all commercial pools and aquatic facilities have a CPO (Certified Pool Operator) certified operator onsite or overseeing management to ensure compliance with codes, standards, and safety. CPO certification equips individuals with the knowledge, techniques, and skills needed for safe pool and spa operations, including water chemistry, filtration, and safety measures. They can also work on pumps, filters, valves, and a few other items.
Gas Tek Services, LLC is a state licensed Certified Pool Contractor (CPC) as well as state licensed for propane (LP). Note that the LP license also covers natural gas units as well.
